The NTB Provincial Government has coordinated with local universities following the dispersal of screenings of the film 'Pesta Babi' at Universitas Mataram, Universitas Pendidikan Mandalika, and Universitas Islam Negeri Mataram, citing concerns over potential societal impacts from the film's provocative title. While no specific ban has been issued by the provincial or central authorities, officials recommend postponing public or group screenings to avoid controversy. This incident highlights tensions around cultural sensitivities and freedom of expression in educational settings in Indonesia.

According to detikBali on Tuesday (12/5/2026), the dispersal was
carried out by the rectorate of Universitas Mataram (Unram) on Thursday
night (7/5). Previously, a similar dispersal of the ‘Pesta Babi’ film
screening occurred at Universitas Pendidikan Mandalika (Undikma) in
Mataram on Monday (27/4). Additionally, a comparable action was taken by
the rectorate of Universitas Islam Negeri (UIN) Mataram on Friday night
(8/5). The Head of the National Unity and Political Agency
(Bakesbangpol) of NTB, Surya Bahari, stated that he had coordinated with
Undikma and Unram regarding the dispersal of the film screening.
According to him, the campuses took the step of dispersal considering
the impacts it could cause. “If left unchecked, the impact would be
extraordinary if indeed allowed to proceed. We have coordinated with
Undikma and its rectorate. So, it’s just internal coordination for now,”
said the former NTB DPRD Secretary. Surya emphasised that the NTB
Provincial Government has not issued any specific prohibition regarding
the screening of the film in the community. However, he suggested that
group or open screenings of the film be postponed for the time being.
“So, there is no specific prohibition. But postpone it first. We are
concerned about the impact. There is no instruction from the centre
yet,” he said. According to Surya, the title of the film ‘Pesta Babi’ is
considered to have an inappropriate impression in society. Therefore, he
asked those who wish to hold open screenings to postpone them first.
“Just mentioning the name of the film gives a different impression. It’s
just not seemly, that’s all,” he said.
",
