Now, Arqam declared banned in all of Java<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Yogyakarta has now banned all the activities of
\nthe Al Arqam, an Islamic movement headquartered in Malaysia,
\nclosing off the entire island of Java to the group which many
\nMoslem leaders consider to deviate from true Islam.<\/p>\n
In a decree dated Oct. 13, the Yogyakarta High Prosecution
\nOffice said that the ban was imposed because Al Arqam has the
\npotential to disrupt religious life in the area, the Antara news
\nagency reported yesterday.<\/p>\n
Jakarta, West Java, Central Java and East Java are among the
\n13 provinces which have outlawed Al Arqam's activities.
\nYogyakarta became the 14th province in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
The government has stressed that it has no intention of
\nimposing a nationwide ban of Al Arqam and will leave the matter
\nentirely in the hands of local governments.<\/p>\n
Sunarno, an assistant in the intelligence section of
\nYogyakarta's High Prosecutor's Office, said the ban was imposed
\nafter hearing recommendations from the Ministry of Religious
\nAffairs and the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI).<\/p>\n
Staff from the prosecutor's office also reported that dialog
\nbetween local leaders of Al Arqam and university students in
\nSleman took place last month and that they found this
\ndisconcerting.<\/p>\n
