Not yet certain Oki killed all three: Police<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): City police still cannot definitely name Harnoko
\nDewantono, alias Oki, as the killer of all three victims -- two
\nIndonesians and a man of Indian origin -- in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n
\"We're still matching our findings with the suspect's
\nconfession and available evidence, meaning that our investigation
\nhas yet to be finalized,\" the head of the Crime Investigation
\nDepartment of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, Col. Nurfaizi,
\ntold a press meeting yesterday.<\/p>\n
Nurfaizi refused to disclose Oki's alleged role in the three
\nLos Angeles murders based on the Jakarta police tentative
\nfindings during their recent two-week investigation there.<\/p>\n
He also declined to clarify -- based on their latest findings
\n-- when and how the victims were killed.<\/p>\n
\"We're still digging up facts for further conclusion,\" said
\nNurfaizi, who at the meeting was accompanied by City Police
\nspokesman Lt. Col. Bambang Haryoko and two detectives who had
\njust returned from Los Angeles.<\/p>\n
A day earlier, visiting detective Ted Ball from the Los
\nAngeles Police Department (LAPD) revealed the American version of
\nOki having killed all three victims as was surmised during their
\ninvestigation.<\/p>\n
The suspect, however, has so far given different versions to
\nlocal interrogating officers about the killing of Suresh
\nMichandani, his Indian business partner, Gina Sutan Aswar, a
\nIndonesian woman, and (Eri) Tri Harto Darmawan, Oki's younger
\nbrother.<\/p>\n
Oki once confessed to killing only Eri after his brother
\nmurdered the other two victims. On another occasion, Oki admitted
\nkilling them all.<\/p>\n
Hope<\/p>\n
\"Interrogating Oki would enable us to compare things we found
\nin Los Angeles to what he confesses. But we haven't questioned
\nhim since our return here,\" Lt. Col. Gories Mere, who led the
\nJakarta detective team to the United States, told The Jakarta
\nPost.<\/p>\n
\"But, we hope that Oki will admit he killed all three
\nvictims,\" Capt. Wahyu, one of the team members, added.<\/p>\n
Both officers, however, refused to give further explanation.<\/p>\n
In America, the Jakarta police compiled written and legal
\ntestimonies of at least 21 people, covering four LAPD detectives,
\n11 medical experts and six witnesses.<\/p>\n
In Jakarta, they collected testimonies from Oki's ex-
\ngirlfriend Ipunk, his driver Mardi and two other witnesses.<\/p>\n
The three victims are believed to have been killed separately
\non different occasions in Los Angeles between 1991 and 1993.
\nTheir decomposed bodies were found together in a storage locker
\nin August last year.<\/p>\n
Oki, listed as a wanted criminal by the LAPD since December
\nwhen the bodies were identified, was apprehended by the Jakarta
\npolice on Jan. 7 on allegations of passport forgery and was later
\nquestioned about his alleged role in the three Los Angeles
\nmurders.<\/p>\n
The venue of trial of Oki's case might be decided in a
\nministerial coordinating meeting tomorrow, following a request by
\nthe United States government for the extradition of Oki.<\/p>\n
According to Attorney General Singgih, Oki will be tried in
\nIndonesia if the prosecutors find that the dossiers can meet
\nprerequisites set by the local law.<\/p>\n
If there is inadequate material evidence, there will be two
\npossibilities: extradite Oki to the United States or \"close the
\ncase,\" Singgih told reporters.<\/p>\n
\"But the venue of trial will completely be the prosecutors'
\ndecision. They will appoint the court which will try the case,\"
\nhe explained.<\/p>\n
According to Jakarta police officers, Indonesia law allows the
\ncase to be tried here using such evidence as photos, forensic
\nexpert reports and other legal documents. (bsr)<\/p>",
