The economic price of a 3 kg LPG canister is approximately Rp56,000, more than double the Rp20,000 paid by consumers, according to MPR Deputy Speaker Eddy Soeparno. He highlighted that 63% of energy subsidies are mistargeted, with the government bearing a difference of around Rp35,000 per canister. President Prabowo Subianto separately noted that 66.4 million households receive LPG subsidies, a figure far exceeding neighbouring countries.

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia — Deputy Speaker of the People’s Consultative
Assembly (MPR RI) Eddy Soeparno has revealed that the government is
still providing large subsidies for 3-kilogram (kg) Liquefied Petroleum
Gas (LPG), given that 3kg LPG currently circulates among the public at
around Rp20,000 per cylinder.

According to Eddy, the true economic price of a 3kg LPG cylinder
actually reaches around Rp56,000, or more than double what the public
pays.

“For 3kg LPG, ladies and gentlemen, the price is roughly
Rp20,000–Rp21,000. Its economic cost is Rp56,000,” he said at the CNBC
Indonesia Coffee Morning event, quoted on Monday (27/7/2026).

He considered the size of the subsidy a challenge because its
distribution is deemed not properly targeted. Based on data from the
National Energy Council (DEN) cited by Eddy, the majority of energy
subsidies are not enjoyed by groups that genuinely need them, so steps
to improve recipient data are required.

“According to the National Energy Council, 63% of our energy
subsidies are misdirected,” Eddy said.

As such, there is a difference of around Rp35,000–Rp36,000 per
cylinder borne by the government as a subsidy to keep the price of 3kg
LPG affordable for those entitled to receive it.

Earlier, President Prabowo Subianto disclosed the extent of the
energy subsidies the government provides to the public. At the very
least, tens of millions of households in Indonesia enjoy various forms
of subsidies, ranging from LPG and fuel to electricity.

He detailed that as many as 66.4 million households receive LPG
subsidies. That figure, he said, is far larger than those of
neighbouring countries.

“LPG subsidies — 66 million households receive LPG subsidies, 66
million 400 thousand households, twice Malaysia’s, twelve times
Singapore’s. Not bad for the Indonesian government, right?” Prabowo said
at the Plenary Cabinet Session at the State Palace on Monday
(20/7/2026).

According to him, this achievement is the result of the hard work of
the entire government since the era of Indonesia’s first President,
Soekarno, up to the present.

“My friends, without us realising it, what we have achieved — and as
I always say, let us be aware that this is our joint achievement from
the era of Bung Karno until now,” he said.
",
