Jayan Sentanuhady, lecturer in Mechanical Engineering\nat Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), says high-RON petrol is only\ncompatible with high-compression engines. For example, a vehicle with a\ncompression ratio of 9:1 can suffice with RON 90 petrol or even RON 88.\nUsing high-octane petrol on a low-compression engine is not considered\nto provide significant benefits. \u2018High-RON petrol will only be effective\non high-compression engines, this is because the engine specifications\nsupport it,\u2019 Jayan said. In addition, Jayan said high-RON petrol is\nindeed more suitable for modern vehicles. \u2018In engines with high\ncompression ratios like those widely used today, low-octane petrol can\ntrigger knocking. The impact is not only reduced performance, but also\nincreases the operating temperature, and in the long term can accelerate\nwear of components such as the piston and cylinder head,\u2019 he said.
