The Ministry for Women\u2019s Empowerment and Child Protection (PPPA) has\nstated that the victim of a police shooting in Makassar, South Sulawesi,\nwho died after being shot, was an adult male. Earlier reports had said\nthe victim was a teenage student. \u2018The victim died as an adult male,\naged 18 years 4 months,\u2019 said Ciput Eka Purwianti, Assistant Deputy for\nthe Provision of Services to Children Requiring Special Protection at\nKemenPPPA, on Friday 6 March, as quoted by Antara.<\/p>\n
On that basis, Purwianti said the PPPA could not provide further\nassistance to the victim or his family. She noted that the victim was\nnot a child, even though he was still enrolled in senior high school.\n\u2018Given that the male victim is already an adult, no further action will\nbe taken,\u2019 Purwianti added.<\/p>\n
Nevertheless, Purwianti stressed that the PPPA regrets the alleged\nnegligence in firearm use by police that led to the victim\u2019s death.<\/p>\n
According to data received by the PPPA, the victim was recorded as a\nstudent in grade 12 (year 3 of senior high school) in Makassar.<\/p>\n
To date, Makassar City\u2019s Regional Technical Implementation Unit for\nthe Protection of Women and Children (UPTD PPA) has carried out initial\noutreach to the victim\u2019s home, but could not meet the family as they\nwere in mourning.<\/p>\n
The victim had apparently been living with his biological father, and\nhis paternal grandfather and grandmother. The parents of the victim were\ndivorced.<\/p>\n
Previously, Betrand Eka Prasetyo (18), a male teenager, was shot dead\nby Iptu N, a police officer of Panakkukang Police Sector, Makassar, on\nSunday 1 March.<\/p>\n
Initially, police had received reports of a group of youths playing a\nform of mock warfare using toy weapons that fired gel pellets in\nPanakkukang. The report stated that the youths\u2019 actions disrupted road\nusers.<\/p>\n
Iptu N subsequently went to the scene, fired a warning shot to\ndisperse the crowd, and sought to secure the victim. However, the victim\nresisted and is believed to have attempted to flee.<\/p>\n
Based on police investigations disclosed by Makassar City Police\nChief, Kombes Pol Arya Perdana, the pistol belonging to N discharged\naccidentally at the time and struck the victim.<\/p>\n
The victim was immediately transported to Grestelina Hospital.\nHowever, due to limited medical equipment, he was referred to\nBhayangkara Hospital Makassar. Tragically, he died en route.<\/p>\n
As of now, Iptu N has been named a suspect and is undergoing ethical\nproceedings. The firearm used has also been secured by internal police\nauthorities.<\/p>\n
Firearm evaluation by Polri<\/p>\n
Polri has said it will continue to conduct evaluations, including the\nuse of firearms by its officers, in the wake of the fatal shooting\nincident attributed to Iptu N.<\/p>\n
\u2018That evaluation process, you know, is ongoing at all times. Every\nstep in operational activities and in police training involves analysis\nand evaluation, from before planning to during implementation and\nafter-action review,\u2019 said Brig. Gen.\u00a0Trunoyudo Wisnu Andiko, Head of\nPublic Relations at the Polri\u2019s Public Information Bureau (Karo Humas),\nat the Bareskrim building in Jakarta on Thursday 5 March.<\/p>\n
He added that supervision functions exist at various levels to ensure\nthat evaluations are carried out.<\/p>\n
Earlier, Makassar City Police Chief Kombes Pol Arya Perdana asserted\nthat Iptu N would still be processed for the shooting of Betrand Eka\nPrasetyo despite it being accidental while trying to disperse a group\nplaying with toy weapons.<\/p>\n
