Nonaccredited press given Olympic access<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): With a mounting ambition to become the best host
\nfor the Olympic Games ever in history, the New South Wales and
\nfederal governments are setting up a \"non-accredited\" media
\ncenter to be called the Sydney Media Center at Darling Harbour
\nnear downtown Sydney.<\/p>\n
Public Affairs Counselor at the Australian Embassy in Jakarta,
\nKirk Coningham, told reporters Tuesday that the center is
\ndesigned to serve all well-known media regardless of Olympic
\naccreditation.<\/p>\n
\"We expect a total of 15,000 journalists from all over the
\nworld to cover the Olympics and we hope they write not only about
\nthe Games but also about Australia itself. Therefore we are
\nproviding the media center,\" he said at a briefing in the
\nAustralian Embassy in South Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The National Sports Council (KONI) only received a limited
\nnumber of accreditation forms from the Sydney Organizing
\nCommittee for the Olympic Games (SOCOG). Therefore many non-
\naccredited journalists will cover the quadrennial event using the
\nfacilities available at the center as they will not be allowed to
\nenter sports venues.<\/p>\n
The center provides on-site color-negative film processing and
\nprinting for photographers, work stations for print journalists
\nand a main conference room that can accommodate up to 500
\npersons.<\/p>\n
Four well-known broadcasters, Octagon CSI, Global Television,
\nAll Media Sports and Newsforce\/Globecast are jointly supplying
\ninformation to the center.<\/p>\n
Besides the Games, Sydney will also host the Olympics Arts
\nFestival, which will feature the performance of Andrea Boccelli
\nat the Superdome in the Olympic Park in Homebush Bay on Aug. 19
\nand the Sydney Opera House on Sept. 14. (yan)<\/p>",
