When we purchased the tickets the manager<br>\nof the bus company assured us that the bus was air-conditioned<br>\nand non-smoking.<\/p>\n<p>As we both have allergies to cigarette smoke a non-smoking<br>\nmode of transportation is a necessity. We hadn't even left the<br>\nbus station and people, including the three bus company<br>\nemployees, were smoking on the bus. We asked them on two<br>\noccasions not to smoke, mentioning that it was a non-smoking bus<br>\nand that we were ill from the smoke. Our request fell on deaf<br>\nears.<\/p>\n<p>This is not the first time in Indonesia that we have<br>\nexperienced this attitude of indifference towards the rights of<br>\nnon-smokers. Malaysia and Thailand are only two examples of Asian<br>\ncountries that have non-smoking buses, however the rule of no<br>\nsmoking is respected by all passengers -- nationals and<br>\nforeigners.<\/p>\n<p>I pity the bus owner as the air ducts, with continued<br>\ncigarette smoking, will eventually clog up and the air-<br>\nconditioning system will break down, leading to expensive<br>\nrepairs.<\/p>\n<p>The latest development in the travel industry is non-smoking<br>\nTrans-Atlantic flights by the major Airlines. If Indonesia wishes<br>\nto stay progressive in the travel industry, existing non-smoking<br>\nlaws need to be enforced and new ones implemented that give non-<br>\nsmokers areas in restaurants and other public spaces.<\/p>\n<p>JENNIFER EASTER<\/p>\n<p>Ontario, Canada<\/p>",
