No Y2K problems for RI aviation industry<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia's aviation industry will have its
\ncomputer systems free from any problems posed by the millennium
\nbug by the second quarter of this year, Minister of
\nCommunications Giri Suseno Hadihardjono said on Thursday.<\/p>\n
He said the government, airport managements and airline
\noperators had given high priority to dealing with the millennium
\nbug, also known as the Y2K. This priority also includes providing
\nthe necessary funds to deal with any potential Y2K problems, he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Airlines are now looking at possible millennium bug problems
\nin their electronic components, aircraft computer systems and on-
\nline reservation systems, he said.<\/p>\n
Airport managements also are working on possible Y2K problems,
\nincluding looking at computer systems used for air traffic
\ncontrol (ATC), Giri said.<\/p>\n
\"God willing, all operations regarding Y2K compliance for the
\nair transportation sector will be completed by the end of the
\nsecond quarter of this year,\" Giri said.<\/p>\n
He said priority was being given to major airports which
\noperated high-technology electronic systems in their ATCs,
\nincluding Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta,
\nPolonia Airport in Medan, Juanda Airport in Surabaya and Ngurah
\nRai Airport in Bali.<\/p>\n
Bringing computer systems into compliance does not necessarily
\nrequire a huge expenditure by airport managements, he said.<\/p>\n
\"The funds are not so large because from the beginning we have
\nrequired all new electronic equipment for airports to be Y2K
\ncompliant, so components needed to fix airport systems are not
\ntoo costly,\" he was quoted by Antara as saying.<\/p>\n
Y2K problems are expected to arise from the inability of some
\ncomputers and computer systems to recognize the date on Jan. 1,
\n2000, because computers were programmed to read only the last two
\ndigits of a year.<\/p>\n
The glitch may cause computers to malfunction or shut down.<\/p>\n
Giri said travel agents who use on-line reservation systems
\nalso must make sure their computer systems were Y2K compliant.<\/p>\n
Giri, chairman of the government-sponsored Y2K problem
\nhandling team, said the banking sector and the customs office
\nwould likely be free from possible millennium bug problems by the
\nend of June.<\/p>\n
Those who have made their computer systems Y2K compliant
\nshould also prepare contingency plans and conduct some testing to
\nanticipate possible failures, Giri said.<\/p>\n
He hailed state-electricity company PT Perusahaan Listrik
\nNegara's (PLN) move to prepare contingency plans despite its
\noptimism that its computer system was Y2K compliant.<\/p>\n
PLN announced earlier this week it had allocated US$15 million
\nto upgrade its computer system in anticipation of the millennium
