No short cuts to change: PPP chairman<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The United Development Party (PPP) has
\naffirmed its customary stance by rejecting the revolutionary
\n\"people's power\" and, instead, advocating gradual change and
\nreforms.<\/p>\n
\"The PPP will not budge from its stance that changes in all
\naspects of life should be made constitutionally, gradually and
\ncontinuously,\" Chairman Ismail Hasan Metareum said while opening
\na meeting of the Jakarta branch of his party yesterday.<\/p>\n
\"Change cannot be achieved via shortcuts, abruptly, much less
\nthrough a revolution,\" he said as quoted by the Antara news
\nagency.<\/p>\n
Abrupt changes through anarchy, even if they yield results,
\nwould be only temporary in nature, he said.<\/p>\n
\"Those who attempt to use 'people's power' in seeking change
\nand reforms will not only have to contend with the government and
\nthe armed forces, but also with the people who can no longer be
\nfooled,\" he said.<\/p>\n
\"The PPP is against change and reforms carried out in
\nunconstitutional ways,\" he said. \"The PPP also disagrees with
\nthose who suggest there is a dichotomy between the government and
\nthe people, because the government is part of the people.\"<\/p>\n
He said the PPP was unwilling to think of the government as a
\ntool for \"conquering, taming and steering the people\".<\/p>\n
There are dissatisfactions, demonstrations and rebellions,
\nwhich, he said, come from the \"nation's ills\", such as
\ncorruption, collusion between business people and corrupt
\nofficials, the commercialization of authority and positions,
\ndiscrimination and arbitrary measures by officials.<\/p>\n
\"These ills of the nation should be gradually eliminated,\" he
\nsaid. \"The PPP does not see any other way to advance this nation
\nexcept by creating a clean and respected government.\"<\/p>\n
\"Demonstrations of dissatisfaction are normal, as long they
\nare carried out in the spirit of akhlaqul karimah (Islamic code
\nof good conduct),\" he said.<\/p>\n
Ismail said that 1995 would become the \"Year of PPP Action\";
\nof a party committed to defending the truth and justice.<\/p>\n
\"The PPP will oppose any form of discrimination in any aspect
\nof life, so that all citizens will be equal, and the only thing
\nthat will differentiate them from one another will be their
\ndevotion towards and actions for the benefit of the people, the
\nnation, and the country,\" he said.<\/p>\n
\"The party cannot respect conglomerates if their wealth is
\ngained through negative collusion, pilfering, oppressing workers,
\nand if they only provide a small benefit for the country,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Ismail urged PPP members \"not to distance themselves from the
\npeople.\"<\/p>\n
\"Public demands are no longer limited to mere food and
\nclothing..they now demand freedom to promote their interests, or
\nfreedom to play a role (in society) and to create something,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Ismail asked party members to defend the interests of the
\nmembers of the less privileged in society, like small traders,
\npeople whose land is appropriated arbitrarily, victims of
