No sense of justice<\/p>\n
Once again the government and the political elite have
\ndemonstrated their ineptitude in the face of a crisis, with their
\ndecision to increase fuel, electricity and telephone charges.<\/p>\n
Even more perplexing to us was the decision by President
\nMegawati Soekarnoputri's husband, Taufik Kiemas, to celebrate his
\nbirthday with a grand party in Bali. As a number of government
\nofficials and members of the House of Representatives (DPR) were
\nin attendance it is understandable the chairman of the Justice
\nParty (PK), Hidayat Nurwahid, voiced his concerns as to the lack
\nof a sense of crisis demonstrated under the current
\ncircumstances.<\/p>\n
Worse still, with the recent issuance of release and discharge
\nto private debtors we learn the government and some of the
\npolitical elite lack not only any sense of crisis but also any
\nsense of justice.<\/p>\n
It will be the public that suffers the burden of the debts not
\nrepaid by the tycoons and the public that will be responsible for
\nthe government's growing foreign debt.<\/p>\n
So now, to balance the state budget, the government has
\nincreased charges for fuel, electricity and phone calls and by
\ndoing so has effectively altered the price of basic commodities.<\/p>\n
And therein lies the irony: The tycoons are freed from their
\nobligation to return their debts totaling trillions of rupiah,
\nthe politicians party in Bali and the people pay the price.<\/p>\n
