Governor Saleh Djasit said Riau province would consent to the
\nestablishment of Riau archipelago (Kepri) as a new province, once
\nthe proposal wins political support from the region's residents,
\nas well as community and religious leaders.<\/p>\n
\"If the people of the archipelago agree on the proposal, then
\nthe Riau provincial administration has no objection to the
\nformation of Riau archipelago province,\" Dun Usul, who led a
\ndelegation from the archipelago at a meeting with the governor,
\nquoted him as saying on Friday.<\/p>\n
Efforts to establish the new province began when aspirations
\nfor regional autonomy began simmering four years ago.<\/p>\n
But the movement foundered because not all of the four regency
\nlegislative councils in Riau archipelago gave their support to
\nthe proposal.<\/p>\n
Within the Riau archipelago, so far, only the members of the
\nNatuna Legislative Council have ruled out the proposal, which
\nthey said would cause problems for the region.<\/p>\n
The proposal to establish a Riau archipelago province has been
\nstrongly felt after a number of local figures and nongovernmental
\norganizations (NGOs) brought their support for the proposal to
\nthe central government and the House of Representatives.<\/p>",
