        "content": "<p>No pressure on government over forest fires<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Little pressure can be expected to be put on<br>\nthe government to take concrete action to prevent further forest<br>\ndestruction, given Indonesia's position as a major business<br>\npartner to its neighbors, an environmentalist has said.<\/p>\n<p>Agus Purnomo, executive director of the World Wide Fund for<br>\nNature (WWF), said on Tuesday, \"Neighboring countries complain<br>\nabout the haze from slash-and-burn forest clearing but no<br>\npressure will be made as Indonesia is their potential business<br>\npartner,\" which neighbors need to maintain long-term good<br>\nrelations.<\/p>\n<p>He said there has been no significant follow-up to a recent<br>\nmeeting of Southeast Asian ministers in Singapore to combat the<br>\nhaze.<\/p>\n<p>The ministers had underlined the importance of taking<br>\nimmediate and firm action in stepping up implementation of a<br>\nregional action plan to combat the haze.<\/p>\n<p>The ministers said efforts would also be accelerated to<br>\npromote a \"zero-burning policy\" among plantation owners and<br>\ntimber concessionaires, especially in Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia<br>\nand Singapore, which were most affected by haze.<\/p>\n<p>The Indonesian Forum for Environment's chairwoman, Emmy<br>\nHafild, said that despite international pressure, forest<br>\ndegradation here has reached about one million hectares of<br>\nforests per year.<\/p>\n<p>Over 104 bird species, 57 mammal species, 21 reptile species,<br>\n65 fish species and 281 plant species were now categorized as<br>\nnearly extinct, Emmy said.<\/p>\n<p>WWF's deputy director, Togu Manurung, said natural forest<br>\nconversion, which has been widely abused by industries, should be<br>\nterminated.<\/p>\n<p>WWF executives said they would join forces with various non-<br>\ngovernmental organizations and the community to find solutions<br>\nfor decisionmakers.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel Murdiyarso, an ecosystem expert, has urged the<br>\ngovernment to take effective preventive action in handling forest<br>\nfire destruction, instead of only concentrating on expensive<br>\ninvestments in remote-sensing for tracing hot spots.
