        "content": "<p>Across the globe, the popularity of electric vehicles is rising, and\nIndonesia is no exception. Even so, many people still question the\nsafety of electric cars.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, electric vehicles offer the same level of safety as\nconventionally engined cars. For example, electric cars sold in\nIndonesia must undergo a homologation process in accordance with\nelectromagnetic compatibility (EMI\/EMC) standards, including UNECE R10\n(the European standard) and AIS-004 (a mandatory standard in India).<\/p>\n<p>These standards require the vehicle and all its electrical and\nelectronic systems \u2014 such as the PCU\/VCU\/ECU, BMS, inverter, motor and\nCAN communication system \u2014 to have immunity to external electromagnetic\ninterference, keep electromagnetic emissions within permitted limits,\nand continue to function normally under real operating conditions.<\/p>\n<p>In crash tests, electric cars frequently achieve high ratings for\nfrontal collision protection, side impact resistance, child passenger\nsafety and pedestrian protection.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, manufacturers already employ battery management systems\nthat monitor performance and temperature to prevent potential fires\ncaused by excessive heat. Yannes Pasaribu, an automotive expert and\nacademic from ITB, explained that electric vehicles have layered safety\nfeatures, from the battery to the braking system, making them safe to\nuse on public roads.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Battery Management System (BMS), in accordance with ISO 6469-1\n(electrical safety), monitors every battery cell in real time;\nhigh-voltage contactors are ready to cut the circuit in the event of an\nanomaly; and the braking system continues to function even if the\npowertrain fails. High-voltage contactors cut the circuit during a\ncollision in accordance with ISO 6469-3 (passenger protection). The\nbraking system has hydraulic redundancy under UN R13-H and works without\nelectrical power. The EPS steering is equipped with dual-circuit backup\nunder ISO 26262 (functional safety ASIL-D),\u201d Yannes explained, quoted by\ndetikoto on Friday (24\/7\/2026).<\/p>\n<p>Yannes added that the steering of electric vehicles is also equipped\nwith dual circuits meeting ISO 26262. Battery durability is beyond\ndoubt, as it has been tested even in adverse conditions and proven to\nremain safe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll legally sold vehicles, whether Internal Combustion Engine (ICE)\nor Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV), must pass electromagnetic resilience\ntesting, or EMC, under ISO 11452 and CISPR 25 standards, which simulate\nexposure to fields far stronger than conditions at railway crossings.\nAnd there are many more international regulations that must be met\nbefore a BEV can be marketed abroad,\u201d Yannes said.<\/p>\n<p>Yannes also stated that by meeting these homologation standards,\nvehicles certified and legally permitted to operate in the Indian and\nIndonesian markets are, in principle, declared safe from electromagnetic\ninterference under general environmental conditions. They should\ntherefore not experience sudden shutdowns simply from exposure to\nelectromagnetic fields commonly encountered, including at railway\ncrossings.<\/p>\n<p>Yannes stressed that before driving an electric car, drivers should\nfirst take time to adapt. Understanding the ins and outs of electric\nvehicles means that in an emergency, drivers can handle the situation\nthemselves.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn electric car is not merely a petrol car with the battery swapped\nin; there is a fundamental change in how the vehicle works that directly\naffects driving behaviour and emergency response,\u201d Yannes concluded.<\/p>\n<p>For reference, most people worry that an EV battery will explode. In\nfact, cars rarely fail without warning. The same applies to electric\nvehicle battery problems \u2014 there are usually signals before a serious\nincident, and recognising these early is very important.<\/p>\n<p>Things to watch out for include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><p>A sudden, unexplained drop in driving range that does not recover\nwith normal driving patterns.<\/p><\/li>\n<li><p>Unusual heat from the underside of the vehicle, especially when\nparked and not charging.<\/p><\/li>\n<li><p>Strange chemical or burning smells; toxic gas emissions can begin\nbefore smoke becomes visible.<\/p><\/li>\n<li><p>Swelling or deformation around the battery cover area.<\/p><\/li>\n<li><p>Battery warnings on the dashboard that persist or return after\nbeing dismissed.<\/p><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If your electric car has been involved in an accident \u2014 even a minor\none \u2014 have the battery inspected before driving or charging again as a\nprecaution.<\/p>",
