Escalators at Duri Station have resumed operation after one suddenly reversed, injuring 12 passengers, and KAI Commuter has introduced a rule asking passengers not to walk or run on them. Commuters have mixed views: some welcome the safety measure, while others fear longer queues and missed connections, prompting calls for better crowd management or more escalators.

Escalators at Duri Station have resumed operation after one suddenly
reversed several days ago. A new rule, however, prohibits KRL commuters
from running to overtake others on the right-hand side while using the
escalators.

The escalator at Duri Station malfunctioned on Saturday (3 October).
One of the escalators suddenly moved backwards, injuring 12
passengers.

It connects Platform 5 with the station concourse and is an important
route for passengers transferring to other KRL services or leaving the
station.

Detikcom observed at Duri Station on Wednesday (14 October 2026) that
both escalators on Platform 5 were working again. One had been out of
service since Saturday (3 October). Signs instructing passengers to
stand on the left and walk or overtake on the right had been
removed.

New rule: no overtaking

KAI Commuter Vice President of Corporate Secretary Karina Amanda said
the escalator malfunction was caused by the impact of passengers running
or walking to overtake others. For safety reasons, passengers are now
being advised to remain still.

“Based on assessments and safety considerations, KAI Commuter is
urging passengers to behave orderly by standing still, and not walking
or running while on the escalators. This is to ensure everyone’s safety
when using them,” Karina said in a written statement on Wednesday (14
October 2026).

Karina said KRL passengers in a hurry could use the ordinary stairs.
She urged commuters to use the facilities in an orderly manner.

“Passengers who are in a hurry can use the stairs,” she said.

Commuters react to the new rule

Jean, a 40-year-old commuter, said he agreed with KAI Commuter’s
policy. He said escalators were designed to move people automatically,
not to serve as a route for racing up the steps.

“Basically, escalators are designed to move people automatically, not
as a route for racing up the stairs,” Jean said at Duri Station.

Jean had no objection to the rule, but called for better management
of passenger flows to and from the escalators to prevent long
queues.

“I think the policy at Duri Station, that people should stand still,
is the right step, provided it is accompanied by proper management of
passenger congestion,” he said.

Another commuter, Dita, 29, said she was less supportive of the new
rule. She was concerned that passengers transferring between services
would face longer waits to use the escalators and might miss their
connecting trains.

“If both escalators are for standing still, it’s going to get really
crowded. People who are in a hurry to catch the next train could end up
missing it. Trains only wait for a short time, especially when you’re
transferring, so you have to hurry. The stairs over there get crowded
too,” Dita said.

Dita called for more escalators, saying they could ease queues and
congestion.

“Maybe they should just add more escalators,” she said.
",
