'No fumigation at my house yet'<\/p>\n
Many people think that fumigation is ineffective in curbing the
\nspread of dengue as compared to mobilizing the people to
\neliminate the Aedes aegypti mosquito's breeding ground, which is
\nin clear, standing water. The Jakarta Post asked residents their
\nthoughts on the issue.<\/p>\n
Amin, 34, is a driver. He lives with his wife and two children
\nin Cengkareng, West Jakarta:<\/p>\n
There seems to be a dengue outbreak each year now. Thank God,
\nno one in my family, or even my whole neighborhood, has ever
\ncontracted the disease.<\/p>\n
I am aware of the symptoms through the media. And from what I
\nknow, it can be fatal.<\/p>\n
If my children ever have a prolonged fever, I'll rush them to
\na hospital immediately.<\/p>\n
Even though the city administration said it would provide free
\ncare in certain hospitals, I am still not convinced.<\/p>\n
Completing the paperwork and going through all that red-tape
\nwill be a hassle.<\/p>\n
I don't care if I have to borrow money from strangers to go to
\nanother hospital, after all, my children are the most precious
\nthing on earth.<\/p>\n
Tarbilah, 30, is a scavenger. The father of two lives in
\nKelapa Dua, East Jakarta:<\/p>\n
I am not aware that the city has promised to provide free
\ntreatment for dengue patients. Nobody ever told me.<\/p>\n
Although there are lots of mosquitoes, my neighborhood has not
\nbeen fumigated yet. There hasn't been any fumigation of the area
\nin the past two years for that matter.<\/p>\n
However, I think the people in my neighborhood are doing what
\nthey can to prevent dengue. We clean the area each week. So far,
\nnobody has contracted the disease.<\/p>\n
