        "content": "<p>No final word on pay hike<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The budget commission in the House of<br>\nRepresentatives completed its debate on the government's proposed<br>\nspending for the 1996\/1997 year yesterday with no decisive word<br>\non the proposed increase of civil servants' salaries.<\/p>\n<p>The planned increase in the salaries of civil servants,<br>\nincluding military personnel, is high on the agenda of this<br>\nyear's fiscal deliberation.<\/p>\n<p>But in their final overviews, only the Indonesian Democratic<br>\nParty (PDI) and the United Development Party (PPP) factions<br>\ntouched the issue.<\/p>\n<p>The dominant Golkar and Armed Forces factions did not state<br>\ntheir stand on the improvement of the four-million strong civil<br>\nservants' well-being.<\/p>\n<p>The PDI faction proposed salary increases ranging from 25<br>\npercent for middle level and 75 percent for lower level civil<br>\nservants.<\/p>\n<p>The Moslem-based PPP reaffirmed its commitment in seeking<br>\nhigher salaries for civil servants but it did not propose by how<br>\nmuch the salaries should be raised.<\/p>\n<p>The House, which recessed for Idul Fitri yesterday, is<br>\nscheduled to hold a plenary meeting to make a final decision on<br>\nthe government budget on Feb. 29.
