No evidence found in alleged shooting case<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Police said yesterday that they had found no
\nevidence that the damage to the windscreen and rear-view mirror
\nof a vehicle whose owner, Moslem preacher Kyai Nur Muhammad
\nHasan, claimed it had been shot at last Thursday.<\/p>\n
Moreover, the outspoken preacher himself told Tangerang police
\ninvestigators on Sunday evening that he had not felt vibrations
\nthat might have been expected to result from gun shots, city
\npolice spokesman Lt. Col. Iman Haryatna said.<\/p>\n
"Theoretically, things inside the car would also be damaged if
\nbullets penetrated the windshield at close range," Iman said.
\n"Police found neither damage to the interior of the preacher's
\ncar nor any bullets," he added.<\/p>\n
Iman said, however, that investigations would continue. The
\npolice will soon submit the debris from the windscreen to the
\nNational Police Forensic Laboratory for further examination, he
\nadded.<\/p>\n
The broken right-hand rear-view mirror has yet to be
\ncollected, Imam said, adding that it was still in the keeping of
\nNur's driver, Hashyim.<\/p>\n
The preacher told the Tangerang police that the incident took
\nplace at about 9:30 p.m. on Thursday evening on the Karawaci-
\nBitung toll road in West Java on Thursday evening.<\/p>\n
The preacher was traveling with five other people in his
\nPajero vehicle when, suddenly, the vehicle was overtaken by a red
\nsedan from the left-hand side, according to witnesses who had
\nbeen in the Pajero. A few seconds later, Nur saw that the
\nwindscreen and rear-view mirror of his vehicle had been damaged,
\nIman said.<\/p>\n
Early on Monday, Nur and members of his staff were quoted in
\nthe local media, including private TV stations, as saying that he
\nand several of the people in the Pajero heard two gunshots before
\nobserving the damage to the Pajero windscreen and rear-view
\nmirror.<\/p>\n

Based on the press information, the city police headquarters
\nordered the Tangerang police on Sunday evening to collect
\ninformation from Nur, who is the head of the Ashidiqqiyah Moslem
\nBoarding School near his home in Kebon Jeruk, West Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Neither Nur nor any of the other passengers were hurt in the
\nincident.<\/p>\n
Nur is known for his outspokenness. In 1993 he appeared before
\nthe House of Representatives to appeal for the banning of the
\nSDSB lottery on the basis that it was a form of gambling.<\/p>\n
The chairman of the United Development Party, Ismail Hasan
\nMetareum, said yesterday that the Moslem-based party is deeply
\nconcerned about the shooting.<\/p>\n
"Shooting at a kyai (spiritual leader) is too much. We feel
\nthis hurts all of us. We hope the authorities conduct a thorough
\ninvestigation of the case," Ismail said on leaving a party
\nmeeting.<\/p>\n
Police were speculating yesterday that the damage to the rear-
\nview mirror might have been caused by the Pajero's striking the
\nbarrier on the toll road's shoulder, Iman said. Such a bang might
\nalso explain the damage to the windscreen, he added.<\/p>\n
The other possibility is that the windscreen was damaged by a
\nflying stone, as frequently happened on the highway, the
\nspokesman added.<\/p>\n
Police found a hole with a diameter of two centimeters in the
\ndamaged windscreen. However, the nature of both the hole and the
\ndamage to the windscreen is quite different from what is normally
\ncaused by a gunshot, Iman said.<\/p>\n
However, he said, "police have not yet reached a final
\nconclusion."<\/p>\n
According to Nur's assistant, Sarbini, two gunshots were fired
\nby a group of men in a car who had been following the preacher's
\nPajero for a few minutes prior to the shooting.<\/p>\n
One of the passengers of the passing car fired two shots at
\nthe Pajero has it passed, according to Sarbini. (bsr\/anr)<\/p>",
