        "content": "<p>No courage?<\/p>\n<p>According to an announcement by Coordinating Minister for<br>\nDevelopment Supervision and State Administrative Reforms Hartarto<br>\nSastrosoenarto, acts of corruption, collusion and nepotism<br>\ncommitted over the past 32 years while president Soeharto was in<br>\npower have caused the state losses totaling Rp 22.85 trillion.<br>\nApart from Soeharto, also involved were former government<br>\nofficials, their children and cronies of the former first family.<\/p>\n<p>If one were to measure these losses merely in terms of<br>\nmaterial costs as expressed in figures, actually the damage is<br>\nnot as fantastic as, say, the Rp 1.3 trillion loss caused,<br>\nsingle-handedly, by Eddy Tansil, who is now reported to be doing<br>\nquite well in China. The main damage, in a nonmaterial nature, is<br>\nthe collapse of government officials' credibility in the public's<br>\neyes. People seem to be starting to doubt the government's<br>\nsincerity in settling these cases, especially because so far only<br>\nfigures are being released while no concrete steps are seen to be<br>\ntaken to seriously tackle the problem. The legal procedures that<br>\nare pursued seem halfhearted and merely to appease the public's<br>\nanger. Also, the emphasis is still on the former first family<br>\nonly, though corruption, collusion and nepotism exist in the<br>\nentire bureaucracy, including the current Cabinet.<\/p>\n<p>People seem to be getting tired of mere statements, figures<br>\nand data. What we need at present are concrete, bolder and more<br>\nstraightforward steps. (The government) must have the courage to<br>\nface the possibility that certain government officials and their<br>\ncronies may lose face. It must have the honesty to expose whoever<br>\nis involved, including those who are still in power.<\/p>\n<p>The government is facing a difficult choice: whether it should<br>\nprotect its officials against the possibility of losing face or<br>\nrisk losing its credibility altogether.<\/p>\n<p>-- Media Indonesia, Jakarta<\/p>",
