No cholera in Bali<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: Health authorities in Bali have declared that the
\nholiday island is free from the cholera virus after extensive
\nresearch following news reports that a number of Japanese
\ntourists contracted the disease.<\/p>\n
Ministry of Health spokesperson, Suheni Sujatmiko, said the
\nHealth Office in Bali conducted lab tests from samples taken at
\nvarious restaurants in Denpasar, which were most frequented by
\nJapanese tourists.<\/p>\n
The lab tests failed to detect the vibrio bacteria that causes
\ncholera, Suheni told the Antara news agency.<\/p>\n
Some of the restaurants included in having samples taken were
\nthe Sita Restaurant, Bali Hai Cruiser and Uma Sari Restaurant.<\/p>\n
The local health authorities also failed to locate all the
\neating places visited by the Japanese tourists because their
\ntravel was not coordinated by any tour operator.<\/p>\n
Earlier television reports from Japan suggested that as many
\nas 77 Japanese tourists returned from Bali infected by cholera.
\nIndonesian health and tourist officials have questioned the
\naccuracy of the report.<\/p>\n
Suheni said that if the report was true, this would have
\nsuggested a massive outbreak of cholera in Bali, something which
\nis not supported by the reality on the island. (emb)<\/p>",
