No bombs in Jakarta<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Police stated yesterday that no explosive
\nmaterials had been found at buildings recently swept by bomb
\nsquads after the buildings received threatening phone calls.<\/p>\n
Brig. Gen. Sutiyono, head of the National Police Mobile
\nBrigade, which also supervises the bomb squad, said the absence
\nof explosives indicated that there were no civilians in the
\ncountry who could produce a real bomb.<\/p>\n
\"Even if there were civilians who could make bombs, they are
\nonly able to create mercon (firecrackers) but not real bombs,\"
\nSutiyono said.<\/p>\n
He, however, admitted that the bomb hoaxes had kept his
\npersonnel awake day and night.<\/p>\n
He said the threats had sometimes even upset his personnel.<\/p>\n
\"After all, it was good and real practice for all my people so
\nthat they could practice their abilities for a real situation,\"
\nthe one-star general said.<\/p>\n
So far, security authorities have arrested a man who is
\nbelieved to have made a series of phone calls involving bomb
\nthreats in the capital. The identity of the man has not been
\nreleased.<\/p>\n
\"So far, we consider the suspect's actions to be criminal, not
\npolitical,\" National Police Chief Gen. Dibyo Widodo said
\nyesterday.<\/p>\n
He said it was possible the man would later be charged under
\nregulations which cover political-related crime if further
\ninvestigation found hard evidence of political motives behind the
\nman's actions.<\/p>\n
A police source identified the suspect only as M and said he
\nwas arrested in a house in West Jakarta last Saturday.<\/p>\n
The officer, who asked for anonymity, said the man had
\nallegedly made most of the bomb threats by telephone from Cibubur
\nin East Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The officer said the man's arrest was made possible by state-
\nowned telecommunication company, PT Telkom, who informed the
\npolice of calls involving bomb hoaxes made from public telephones
\nin Cibubur.<\/p>\n
The officer would give no further details about the arrest.<\/p>\n
