        "content": "<p>No accurate data on forests<\/p>\n<p>AMBON: The Ministry of Forestry -- assigned to manage the<br>\ncountry&apos;s forests -- has no accurate data concerning provincial<br>\nforests, let alone the deforestation rate, says an official.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;We need an accurate data base,&quot; Boen Purnama, who heads the<br>\nforestry planning body said here on Wednesday, without<br>\nelaboration.<\/p>\n<p>Boen was visiting Ambon to mark the commencement of the<br>\ndevelopment of an information system, to enable the Maluku<br>\nforestry agency to make an inventory of forests in the province.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia has lost more than 75 percent of its forests over<br>\nthe past few decades, leaving only 60 million hectares at<br>\npresent. Over the past five years, some 43 million hectares of<br>\nIndonesia&apos;s forests, or the equivalent of more than half of<br>\nKalimantan Island, has been destroyed.<\/p>\n<p>The World Bank predicts that if the current rapid pace of<br>\ndeforestation continues, Indonesia could lose Sumatra&apos;s forests<br>\nin 2005, with Kalimantan&apos;s to follow within five more years.<br>\n-- Antara<\/p>",
