        "content": "<p>NJS halts services to Christmas Island<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The Darwin-based Australian airline National Jet<br>\nSystem (NJS) is to terminate all its services to Christmas<br>\nIsland, a small Australian island in the Indian Ocean, next month<br>\ndue to sinking demand.<\/p>\n<p>One of the airline's managers, Debora Avory, told The Jakarta<br>\nPost yesterday that the last flight to Christmas Island would be<br>\non Feb. 17.<\/p>\n<p>The decision means there will be no scheduled flights to the<br>\nisland from Jakarta after that date.<\/p>\n<p>\"There are reduced numbers of passengers to the island and we<br>\ndon't want to lose money by keeping the service,\" Avory said.<\/p>\n<p>She reiterated that a drop in demand had caused in the<br>\nsignificant reduction in passenger load on the route.<\/p>\n<p>NJS currently links Jakarta and Christmas Island three times<br>\nper week and Singapore and Christmas Island twice a week. NJS<br>\nserves Jakarta-Christmas Island with BAe-146 aircraft.<\/p>\n<p>Sempati Air, a domestic air carrier, stopped its service to<br>\nChristmas Island several years ago due to low demand. The 137-<br>\nsquare-kilometer Christmas Island, is about 3,000 kilometers<br>\nnorth of Perth and 500 km south of Jakarta.<\/p>\n<p>Avory said that NJS would continue its Denpasar-Broome and<br>\nLombok-Darwin services.<\/p>\n<p>Christmas Island is popular with Indonesians as a resort there<br>\nowned by businessman Robby Sumampouw offers gambling, a form of<br>\nentertainment banned in Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p>The resort's popularity has declined in the recent years due<br>\nto ineffective promotion.<\/p>\n<p>Christmas Island Resort PTY Ltd., the parent company of<br>\nChristmas Island Resort has appealed to the Supreme Court in<br>\nWestern Australia to appoint any party except Casino Austria<br>\nInternational to manage the resort in order to save the property<br>\nas well as hundreds of its employees.<\/p>\n<p>The two parties were involved in a dispute after the number of<br>\nvisitors dropped just a year after the resort opened in 1993. The<br>\nparent company blamed the operator for neglecting promotion and<br>\nmaintenance, causing the resort to lose up to US$21.5 million by<br>\nlast November. (icn)<\/p>",
