Nirwan Bakrie declared suspect in corruption case<\/p>\n

Prominent businessman Nirwan Bakrie has been declared a suspect
\nin a corruption case involving over Rp 100 billion, police
\nauthorities said on Friday without giving any further details.<\/p>\n
National Police detective chief for special crimes Brig. Gen.
\nSuharto said on Friday that Nirwan, a brother of Indonesian
\nChamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN) chairman Aburizal
\nBakrie, had been named a suspect.<\/p>\n
\"He is a suspect and the case is being processed,\" Suharto
\ntold The Jakarta Post before switching off his cellular phone.<\/p>\n
Despite repeated attempts, both Suharto and the National
\nPolice chief of detectives, Insp. Gen. Engkesman Hillep, refused
\nto answer their phones.<\/p>\n
According to police sources, Nirwan was first investigated by
\ncity police based on complaints filed by Bank Indonesia on Sept.
\n7, 2001.<\/p>\n
It is still unclear, however, why the central bank reported
\nNirwan to the police. Nirwan is also a former chief commissioner
\nof the widely diversified Bakrie Brothers conglomerate.<\/p>\n
Businessman H.U. Sutrisna has also been named a suspect in the
\ncase.<\/p>\n
In 1998, city police investigated Nirwan, then chairman of the
\nBakrie Group, in relation to a Rp 900 billion scam at Bank
\nPerniagaan.<\/p>\n
Former deputy chief of the city police detectives unit Lt.
\nCol. Bakat Purwanto said at the time that the police wanted to
\nclarify Nirwan's role in the Bank Perniagaan scandal. Nirwan had
\nreportedly bought a large number of Bank Perniagaan shares.<\/p>\n
The 1997 scam became even more intriguing following the
\nsuspicious death of the bank's former commissioner Hindoro
\nBudianto on June 15, 1998.<\/p>\n
Hindoro, who reportedly fell to his death from his eighth-
\nfloor room in the Hotel Marbela, Anyer, West Jakarta, was
\nallegedly involved in the scam. His death then sparked
\ncontroversy because as the media tried to learn the truth about
\nhis death, Hindoro's family refused to talk to reporters.<\/p>\n
Police had said that they would continue the investigation of
\nthe bank fraud despite Hindoro's death, which police concluded
\nwas a pure accident.<\/p>",
