Nineteen families face eviction<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Nineteen families facing eviction from their
\nland in the Tugu Selatan subdistrict of North Jakarta have asked
\nthe City Council to press the developer concerned to pay them
\ngreater compensation for the loss of their homes.<\/p>\n
H.D. Sembiring, spokesman for the families, told the City
\nCouncil's commission for administration, security and public
\norder that PT Multi Duta Parma Centra has intimidated the
\nresidents to accept Rp 300,000 (US$131) for each square meter of
\nland. He said the real price of the land is Rp 500,000 per square
\nmeter.<\/p>\n
Sembiring said the developer had earlier said that the
\nresidents must either accept the offer or quit the area without
\nbeing paid anything.<\/p>\n
The residents believe the developer has received support from
\nmilitary personnel and subdistrict officials in appropriating the
\nland, Sembiring said.<\/p>\n
Sembiring said that, rather than helping them to gain a higher
\nrate of compensation, the subdistrict head had urged the
\nresidents to give up their land to the developer.<\/p>\n
Letters of complaint have been sent to the North Jakarta mayor
\nand Jakarta Governor Surjadi Soedirdja, but the residents have
\nreceived no response.<\/p>\n
\"Therefore, the residents are looking to the City Council,\"
\nSembiring said.<\/p>\n
PT Multi Duta Parma Centra plans to build a residential
\ncomplex in the area, an employee of the company told The Jakarta
\nPost yesterday. However the source declined to reveal details of
\nthe development plan.<\/p>\n
Fatommy Asaari, the vice chairman of the Council commission,
\npromised to invite the developer to discuss the matter.<\/p>\n
He said that the developer should have consulted with the
\nresidents before setting the rate of compensation.(32)<\/p>",
