Nine political parties pass first screening<\/p>\n

Nine political parties have passed the screening by the Ministry
\nof Justice and Human Rights, paving the way for their
\nparticipation in the general elections in 2004, when the country
\nwill hold its first ever direct presidential election.<\/p>\n
"The nine political parties have met the requirements
\nstipulated in the political party law," justice and human rights
\nminister Yusril Ihza Mahendra said here on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Political Party Law No. 31\/2002 stipulates that a party must
\nhave offices in more than half of the nation's provinces, and in
\nmore than half of the regencies or municipalities of those
\nprovinces, and more than half of the districts in those regencies
\nor municipalities.<\/p>\n
The 2004 Election Law stipulates that the Ministry of Justice
\nand Human Rights has the authority to decide whether or not a
\npolitical party meets the requirements.<\/p>\n
Political parties that pass the ministry's screening will have
\nto undergo further screening by the General Elections Commission
\n(KPU) to determine whether or not they are eligible to join the
\nelections in 2004.<\/p>\n
The parties are the first batch eligible to be screened by the
\nKPU.<\/p>\n
The ministry is now screening another batch of political
\nparties.<\/p>\n
Yusril said 61 political parties had registered with the
\nministry and were waiting to be screened.<\/p>\n
Political parties have to register with the ministry by Aug.
\n31 at the latest in order to be screened. Screening ends on Sept.
\n27.<\/p>\n
Indonesia will have its first ever direct presidential
\nelection between June and August 2004, which would be preceded by
\nthe legislative election on April 5, 2004.<\/p>\n

2. Democratic Catholic Party (PKD)<\/p>\n
3. Indonesian Union Party (PSI)<\/p>\n
4. Justice and Unity Party of Indonesia (PKP Indonesia)<\/p>\n
5. Crescent Star Party (PBB)<\/p>\n
6. Crescent Party of Reform (PBR)<\/p>\n
7. Love the Nation Democratic Party (PDKB)<\/p>\n
8. National Concern Party (PKPB)<\/p>\n
