Nine candidates set for KPU supervisory board<\/p>\n

The General Elections Commission (KPU) on Monday announced nine
\ncandidates for the three remaining seats on the General Election
\nSupervisory Committee, and called on the public to provide inputs
\non those names.<\/p>\n
KPU member Hamid Awaluddin said his office would hold a fit
\nand proper test to screen the candidates on Thursday this week.<\/p>\n
The nine candidates feature prominent names like legal expert
\nHarkristuti Harkrisnowo from the University of Indonesia, Muslim
\nscholar Komaruddin Hidayat from the Jakarta Islamic University,
\nRev. Saut Sirait from the Indonesian Communion of Churches (PGI),
\nRustam Ibrahim from the Institute of Economic and Social
\nResearch, Education and Information (LP3ES), Aceh's Syah Kuala
\nUniversity lecturer Naimah Hassan, Nurjannah of Muslim
\norganization Nasyiatul Aisiyah in Yogyakarta, Zuraini Djamal
\nIrwan a lecturer at Trisakti University in Jakarta, and lecturer
\nSaldi Isra of the West Sumatra Andalas University and Sirra
\nPrajuna from the Independent Committee for Election Monitoring
\n(KIPP).<\/p>\n
They would fill the remaining three seats that were left
\nvacant after only three of the 22 candidates met the criteria to
\nsit on the supervisory committee. They were legislator Didik
\nSupriyanto, human rights activist Rozy Munir, and legal expert
\nTopo Santoso. These three had been screened from a list of 517
\nnames who registered themselves for the position.<\/p>\n
The supervisory committee will be an independent body in
\ncharge of monitoring the transparency and fairness of the 2004
\ngeneral elections.<\/p>\n
By law, the committee must consists of nine members, six of
\nwhich should be selected from the public. The other three seats
\nhave been reserved for the police and officials of the Attorney
\nGeneral's Office.<\/p>\n
Hamid said the police had not submitted a candidate as yet
\nwhile the Attorney General's Office had nominated only one name,
\nMasyhudi.<\/p>\n
\"We hope the selection can be completed as soon as possible,\"
