Nightspots vandalized for ignoring regulations<\/p>\n
MAKASSAR, South Sulawesi (JP): Dozens of people, claiming to
\nbe members of Laskar Jundullah, a Muslim organization, destroyed
\na nightspot on Thursday for ignoring operating hours during the
\nMuslim fasting month.<\/p>\n
It was the second such action by the group, having vandalized
\na karaoke hall last Saturday for a similar reason.<\/p>\n
The Muslim group claimed to be the task force of the Committee
\nfor the Preparation of the Enforcement of Syariah Islam. It was
\nled by Agus Dwikarna during the pre-dawn raid on Terminal One
\nCafe on Jl. Rusa.<\/p>\n
The group smashed windows and all electronic goods in the
\nbuilding, seized hundreds of bottles of liquor and scores of
\npornographic compact video discs.<\/p>\n
Agus said that the management of Terminal One had violated the
\ndeal with the local administration. "We turned over what we
\nseized to the police."<\/p>\n
The sudden raid on the three-story nightspot scared the
\nguests, who fled seeking safety.<\/p>\n
Agus said that the Makassar administration and the police
\nshould actively monitor the nightspots during the Muslim holy
\nmonth of Ramadhan. "Adamant nightspot owners will face the
\npeople."<\/p>\n
Ass. Supt. Idris Kadir, chief of intelligence and security at
\nthe Makassar Police headquarters, said that taking the law into
\none's hands was against the law. "We hope that Laskar Jundullah
\nwill keep working with us in handling such cases."<\/p>\n
On Tuesday the Muslim group marched to the Makassar mayoralty,
\ndemanding that mayor HB Amiruddin Maula ban any entertainment
\ncenters from operating at night during the fasting month.<\/p>\n
"If the administration and police are too slow to act, we will
\ndo it our own way," Agus told the mayor, citing last Saturday's
\nraid on Hotel Century Inn cafe.<\/p>\n
Mayor Maula said legal actions were preferable in dealing with
\nthe nightspots. "I will have those violating the rules punished.
\nI hope that you will show restraint for the sake of the people."
