Nightspots lack fire prevention<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A study has revealed that 64 nightspots in the
\ncity lack fire prevention equipment.<\/p>\n
The 64 establishments, mostly discotheques and bars, are
\nspread across the city and standing on 160 to 8,000 square meter
\nplots of land. Some incorporate restaurants, nightclubs, massage
\nparlors, billiard and karaoke facilities.<\/p>\n
The city has more than 3,223 nightspots, according to the
\npublic order office.<\/p>\n
Fire prevention and management is regulated under city rule
\nNo. 3\/1992. However, the report from the fire department did not
\ndetail all requirements outlined in the rule.<\/p>\n
It focused mainly on extinguishers, alarms, emergency lights
\nand exit lighting, which almost all the nightspots were
\nrecommended to install.<\/p>\n
Fourteen were found to lack both emergency and exit lighting.<\/p>\n
Almost half -- or 31 establishments -- lack emergency stairs,
\nincluding the four-story \"Top 10\" bar, discotheque and karaoke
\nhall on Jl. Hayam Wuruk, West Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The largest site -- the Zodiak in Glodok Plaza -- was reported
\nto have 54 extinguishers for its bar, discotheque, restaurant and
\nnightclub. The nightspot can accommodate up to 10,000 people.<\/p>\n
The management was advised to move extinguishers to more
