Nightspots closed

SURABAYA: Nightspots in Surabaya will be closed during the
\nfasting month of Ramadhan, with only hotels allowed to stage
\nmusic performances in their restaurants, an official said on
\nTuesday.<\/p>\n
Head of Surabaya municipal administration's community
\nprotection and national unity agency, Suyitno Miskal, said that
\nbased on bylaw No. 6\/2003 on tourism businesses, nightspots would
\nbe closed for the entire fasting month.<\/p>\n
The nightspots, he said, included discotheques, pool halls,
\nkaraoke lounges, massage parlors and pubs. During the fasting
\nmonth, red light districts are also required to cease operation,
\nhe added.<\/p>\n
He said violators would receive a warning from the
\nadministration and repeat offenders would have their permits
\nrevoked.<\/p>\n
\"We'll also conduct raids in red light districts and

\nawards scholarships<\/p>\n
MANADO: Singapore Airlines has awarded scholarships to 70
\nstudents with potential in North Sulawesi starting this 2005\/2006
\nschool year until 2008.<\/p>\n
The recipients of the scholarships -- provided through the
\nSingapore Airlines for Education (SIAP) program -- were selected
\nby a team from 100 students registered to receive the
\nscholarship.<\/p>\n
\"Economic hardship due to increased world oil prices means
\nthat many students here cannot afford to continue with their
\neducation,\" the company's assistant manager for public affairs,
\nSupramaniam, told The Jakarta Post on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
He said the company had previously awarded scholarships to
\nstudents in Jakarta, Yogyakarta and Surakarta, but had then added
\nManado as the main city in eastern Indonesia.<\/p>\n
Since it was first launched in 2001, SIAP has provided
\nscholarships -- which cover education costs and textbooks for a
\nyear and can be extended based on the students' academic

Cigarette industry braces

SEMARANG, Central Java: The fuel price increase planned for
\nOct. 1 can be expected to drive up cigarette production costs,
\nleading to a business slowdown, a member of the cigarette
\nindustry said on Monday.<\/p>\n
\"Even without the fuel price hike, we have been struggling
\nwith the rising price of papers, cloves and tobacco leafs. If
\nfuel prices increase 50 percent as planned, it will hit the
\ncigarette industry much harder,\" said Guntur, the secretary-
\ngeneral of cigarette companies in Kudus, Central Java.<\/p>\n
Despite the worrying prospects, Guntur said laying off workers
