Nightclub workers go on strike<\/p>\n
BANDUNG, West Java: Thousands of hostesses stayed off the job
\nat nightclubs and entertainment centers around the city to occupy
\nthe provincial legislature building in protest of their
\nemployers' plan to lay them off during the upcoming Ramadhan
\nfasting month.<\/p>\n
The protesters, mostly the staff members of pubs, discotheques
\nand massage parlors, demanded the provincial legislative council
\npress their employers to cancel a plan to lay them off for
\nfinancial reasons.<\/p>\n
"We call on the Bandung municipal administration to allow us
\nto work through Ramahan because we won't have any money to
\ncelebrate the Idul Fitri holidays if we're laid off," one
\nprotester, Gunawan, said.<\/p>\n
He also said the local administration should review the bylaw
\nbanning entertainment centers from operating during the fasting
\nmonth.<\/p>\n
Syachruddin, a councillor, pledged to discuss the problem with
\nthe local administration and to seek other alternative solutions.
