The impeached former leader of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro, shared his\nlatest photos from a detention centre in the United States via social\nmedia on Sunday. In the post, Maduro asserted that he remains in a\nsteadfast and strong condition.<\/p>\n
Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were arrested by US military\nforces in Caracas last January. They are currently being held in a\ndetention facility in Brooklyn, New and York, on charges of drug\ntrafficking and firearms possession, allegations which they have firmly\ndenied.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am sending these photos as a small gift to all my grandchildren,\nto my sons and daughters, and to all the good people who love us,\u201d\nMaduro wrote via the Telegram messaging service.<\/p>\n
\u201cI want you all to know that we stand firm, with hearts full of love\nfrom you all,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
In the two circulating photos, Maduro is seen wearing grey sportswear\nwhile making a peace symbol with his fingers. Physically, he appears to\nhave experienced significant weight loss since his initial arrest.<\/p>\n
Although the photos were only uploaded on Sunday, camera metadata\nindicates they were captured on 25 June. This date coincides with one\nday after twin deadly earthquakes killed more than 6,500 people and\ncaused widespread damage in northern Venezuela.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe will remain strong, calm, and confident: God is with us. God will\nprovide. Venezuela will rise again,\u201d Maduro concluded in his\nmessage.<\/p>\n
AFP news agency has not yet been able to independently verify the\nauthenticity of the photos. AFP has attempted to contact the detention\nfacility where Maduro is being held to confirm the authenticity and\npermission for publication, but has received no official response.<\/p>\n
Maduro\u2019s message emerged just two days after Venezuela\u2019s Interim\nPresident, Delcy Rodriguez, announced a \u201chistoric\u201d oil deal allowing the\nUnited States to operate oil fields in Venezuela. Rodriguez, who governs\nunder heavy pressure from Washington, stated that she \u201cchose the path of\ndiplomacy\u201d with the US to restore Venezuela\u2019s position as an \u201cenergy\npower.\u201d<\/p>\n
According to sources close to the former leader, Maduro does not have\naccess to newspapers or the internet while in prison. However, he is\npermitted to communicate via telephone with his family and lawyers with\nan allowance of approximately 300 minutes per month, with each call\nlimited to a maximum duration of 15 minutes.<\/p>\n
