        "content": "<p>Nickel resources surveyed<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Queensland Nickel Ltd. of Australia is surveying<br>\nObi island in Maluku for nickel resources.<\/p>\n<p>\"Queensland Nickel is one of the three Australian mining<br>\ncompanies interested in surveying nickel resources in Maluku,\"<br>\nthe chairman of the surveying team of the state-owned PT Aneka<br>\nTambang, Wawan Darmawan, told Antara in Ternate, Maluku,<br>\nyesterday.<\/p>\n<p>He did not mention the names of the other two Australian<br>\nfirms.<\/p>\n<p>Wawan quoted an Australian geologist, John Periones, as saying<br>\nthat the islands of Obi and Halmahera in Maluku have high quality<br>\nnickel which can be mined for decades.<\/p>\n<p>Aneka Tambang currently mines nickel on Gebe island,<br>\nHalmahera, and processes its products in Pomala, Southeast<br>\nSulawesi.<\/p>\n<p>Maluku Utara regent Abdullah Assagaf said that the islands of<br>\nObi, Bacan and Halmahera have manganese and nickel resources.<\/p>\n<p>The regency exported some 1.4 million tons of nickel to Japan<br>\nin the January-October period of 1995, yielding revenues of US$28<br>\nmillion.
