The close relationship between industry and academia was evident at\nthe Study Club 2: \u201cIntroduction of Hydrothermal Alteration\u201d event, held\nby the Learning Division of SEG UNPAD SC on Wednesday, May 6, 2026.<\/p>\n
In front of hundreds of students from the Faculty of Geological\nEngineering (FTG) at Universitas Padjadjaran (UNPAD), PT Nusa Halmahera\nMinerals (NHM) participated not only as a presenter but also as a\n\u201csenior colleague\u201d and partner committed to developing the next\ngeneration.<\/p>\n
This commitment was further demonstrated when NHM donated authentic\nrock specimens from the Gosowong Gold Mine area. This initiative aims to\nbring industrial realities into the classroom, ensuring that students\ncan directly interact with and learn from Indonesia\u2019s natural resources\nas a foundation for their future research and learning.<\/p>\n
The event took place on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at Bale Rucita, the\nUNPAD Rectorate Building, and was moderated by Dr.\u00a0Aton Patonah, S.T.,\nM.T., Head of the FTG UNPAD Quality Assurance Unit.<\/p>\n
In his opening remarks, Aton expressed his appreciation to NHM for\ntaking the time to participate in the event despite the company\u2019s busy\noperational schedule. \u201cWe thank NHM for their participation; it is not\neasy to bring industry practitioners in the midst of their busy\noperations. This also proves that alumni connections are essential as a\nbridge for collaboration between campus and the world of work,\u201d he\nsaid.<\/p>\n
The collaboration featured three senior NHM practitioners who shared\ntheir direct experiences on mining operations from various technical\nperspectives.<\/p>\n
Bahrudin Abiad, Manager of the Kencana Underground Mine, began the\nsession by presenting a comparative study of best practices in\nunderground mine operations at Gosowong.<\/p>\n
The presentation was followed by Rendy Nurdianto, NHM Exploration\nManager, who explained the characteristics of hydrothermal alteration in\nepithermal deposits through a case study of the Gosowong Gold Mine.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Dharma Irwanda, NHM Geology Superintendent, complemented\nthe series of materials by emphasizing the importance of drilling\naccuracy as one of the key factors in the success of mineral exploration\nand mining processes.<\/p>\n
In addition to sharing materials, NHM donated altered rock samples\nand examples of mineralization originating from rocks around the\nGosowong Vein deposit. These specimens are characteristic rocks or\nindicators of the presence of economically viable gold mineralization in\nthe Gosowong deposit. This donation is a concrete form of support to\nhelp students better understand the concept of hydrothermal\nalteration.<\/p>\n
\u201cWith the availability of altered rock and mineralization samples\nfrom Gosowong, students can directly see the output of hydrothermal\nactivity related to the presence of economically viable gold\nmineralization. This is an ideal teaching material and can also be used\nas a reference indicator in understanding the characteristics of\nalteration zones and exploration models for potential future gold\nmineralization,\u201d said Rendy.<\/p>\n
This session was a valuable opportunity for students to engage in\ndirect dialogue with practitioners, transforming the classroom into a\nvibrant forum for discussion on the realities and challenges of the\nmining industry.<\/p>\n
Through this participation, NHM aims to demonstrate its commitment to\nsupporting future geologists. More than just sharing knowledge, NHM is\ncommitted to continuing to foster good relationships with the education\nsector to help young people grow into competent, confident individuals\nwho are ready to enter the workforce.
