        "content": "<p>NGOs start education campaign<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA: Nine non-governmental organizations belonging to the <br>\nPlural Community Group (KUMPUL), and hailing from Jakarta, <br>\nYogyakarta and Bogor, have joined forces to organize a one-month <br>\neducation campaign from April 21 through May 20.<\/p>\n<p>The campaign is intended to raise awareness among the people <br>\nthat a lot of marginalized people like women, street children, <br>\npeople from the lower income bracket, tribal communities <br>\nthroughout the archipelago, and the disabled are all entitled to <br>\nbe respected as human beings.<\/p>\n<p>The campaign has taken Meeting marginalized people&apos;s rights to <br>\neducation as its theme.<\/p>\n<p>KUMPUL urged the government to prudently develop alternative <br>\neducation mechanisms for such people, and to eradicate widespread <br>\ncorruption and nepotism in the national education system.<\/p>\n<p>Minister takes over Lampung govt<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA: Home minister Hari Sabarno has temporarily taken <br>\ncontrol of public administration in Lampung province following <br>\nthe arrest of governor-elect Alzier Dianis Thabranie on criminal <br>\ncharges.<\/p>\n<p>The ministry&apos;s director general for regional autonomy, <br>\nOentarto Sindung Mawardi, made a statement to that effect here on <br>\nTuesday while explaining the government&apos;s stance over Thabranie&apos;s <br>\narrest.<\/p>\n<p>According to Oentarto, the appointment of the minister to <br>\ntemporarily take charge of the Lampung administration was <br>\ncontained in a presidential decree.<\/p>\n<p>He disclosed that the minister in turn had assigned the <br>\nministry&apos;s head of research and development, Tuswandi, as acting <br>\ngovernor to deal with the day-to-day running of the province.<\/p>\n<p>The director general pointed out that Sabarno also expected <br>\nthe acting governor, in cooperation with Lampung&apos;s provincial <br>\nlegislative assembly, to furnish the public with accurate <br>\ninformation regarding the Alzier affair.<\/p>\n<p>The minister, Oentarto said, had also asked the provincial <br>\nlegislative assembly to evaluate the mechanisms for gubernatorial <br>\nelections and to improve them so that a candidate facing <br>\nprosecution would not be elected in the future.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;This issue will be referred back to the provincial <br>\nlegislative assembly so that its members can ensure the election <br>\nof a governor who is free of legal problems,&quot; he said. <br>\nAccording to Oentarto, his ministry had actually warned the <br>\nprovincial legislative assembly that Alzier was facing legal <br>\nproblems, but the legislators had decided to ignore the warning.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;When the issue had become a legal case, the provincial <br>\nlegislators referred it to the Ministry of Home Affairs. The <br>\nministry, however, can do nothing to interfere with the legal <br>\nprocess,&quot; Oentarto pointed out.<\/p>\n<p>;JP;KHS;<br>\nANPA..r..<\/p>\n<p>JP\/4\/scen-22<\/p>\n<p>RI to host meeting on children<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA: Indonesia will host the sixth East Asia and Pacific <br>\nMinisterial Consultation on Children in Nusa Dua on the resort <br>\nisland of Bali from May 5 through May 7.<\/p>\n<p>The ministerial consultation is being jointly organized by the <br>\nIndonesian government and UNICEF.<\/p>\n<p>Some interesting events will be organized in conjunction with <br>\nthe ministerial consultation, including a children&apos;s delegation <br>\nforum, where children will talk about issues of concern to <br>\nchildren themselves; child journalists, where four child <br>\njournalists will cover the conference, including conducting <br>\ninterviews with important figures attending the consultation <br>\nmeeting, and the UNICEF Child Awards.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia will send five children to the event.<\/p>\n<p>UNICEF is also facilitating the participation of four child <br>\njournalists from Kupang (East Nusa Tenggara), Makassar (South <br>\nSulawesi), Yogyakarta and Jakarta.<\/p>\n<p>The consultation meeting will also present awards to children <br>\nwho have contributed to improving the quality of life of children <br>\nin Indonesia. JP<\/p>\n<p>Legal pact required to maintain coalitions<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA: Minister of Home Affairs Hari Sabarno on Tuesday <br>\ndefended his proposal requiring any political parties entering <br>\ninto coalitions to enter into legally binding agreements.<\/p>\n<p>Hari said a legal agreement would help the political parties <br>\nin a coalition to maintain unity during the president&apos;s five-year <br>\nterm.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking during a meeting with legislators, the minister added <br>\nthat strong ties between the parties in a coalition would <br>\nminimize the chances of desertion.<\/p>\n<p>Several factions questioned the new requirement. Rodjil <br>\nGhufron of the National Awakening Party (PKB) said that a <br>\ncoalition should merely be based on agreement.<\/p>\n<p>The minister added that coalitions of parties were designed to <br>\nhelp the parties win the presidential elections. - Antara<\/p>\n<p>5,000 workers for M&apos;sia per month<\/p>\n<p>BENGKULU: The Malaysian consulate general in Medan, the <br>\ncapital of North Sumatra province, has approved the sending of  <br>\n5,000 Indonesians per month to work in Malaysia as plantation <br>\nworkers, medical staff and domestic helpers.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Malaysia needs hundreds of thousands of workers in many <br>\nfields following the forceful repatriation of illegal workers to <br>\ntheir home countries last year,&quot; Consul General Muhammad Yusof <br>\nbin Abu Bakar said here on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Before being sent to Malaysia, he said, the workers would be <br>\ninformed of their rights and obligations, and how to seek police <br>\nassistance in an emergency.<\/p>\n<p>He expressed the hope that Indonesians wishing to work in <br>\nMalaysia would follow the legal procedures when seeking <br>\nemployment in the neighboring country.<\/p>",
