        "content": "<p>NGOs seeks to combat Ecstasy drug menace<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Representatives from more than 50 non-<br>\ngovernmental organizations from 32 countries will meet here next<br>\nmonth to discuss ways of combating the Ecstasy menace, which has<br>\nspread to many parts of the world.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia will host the 16th International Federation of Non-<br>\nGovernment Organizations (IFNGO) Conference for the Prevention of<br>\nDrug and Substance Abuse, on Dec. 2-6.<\/p>\n<p>Putera Astaman, a retired police major general and chief of<br>\nthe organizing committee, said yesterday the NGO meeting would<br>\nlook into problems relating to Ecstasy and traditional drug<br>\nabuse.<\/p>\n<p>\"Ecstasy abuse is happening not only in Indonesia, but also in<br>\nmany countries abroad,\" Putera said.<\/p>\n<p>\"We, the NGOs, feel called on to address the problems,\" said<br>\nthe chairman of Bersama, an umbrella organization for all<br>\nactivities in Indonesia related to the prevention of narcotic,<br>\npsychotropic drug and other substance abuse.<\/p>\n<p>Around 400 activists, 144 from Indonesia, have registered for<br>\nthe conference.<\/p>\n<p>President Soeharto will open the conference which has the<br>\ntheme \"Government and Non-Government Organizations Together<br>\nEmpowering Society for Drug-Free Human Resources\".<\/p>\n<p>Putera said the theme reflects the concerns Indonesia and most<br>\nother countries have about the impact of drug abuse on the<br>\nquality and productivity of their people.<\/p>\n<p>Putera said the conference will discuss methods of informing<br>\nthe public of the dangers of drug abuse, treatment for drug<br>\naddicts, and other action plans.<\/p>\n<p>The participants will make a number of field visits, including<br>\none to the Suryalaya Islamic Rehabilitation Center in Bandung,<br>\nWest Java, dubbed Indonesia's success story in rehabilitating<br>\nvictims of drug addiction.<\/p>\n<p>The IFNGO was established in Jakarta in 1979 by six NGOs: ADCA<br>\nof Australia, Bersama of Indonesia, Pemadam of Malaysia,<br>\nPhilcadsa of Philippines, NGO-ANCC-NCSW of Thailand, and Sana of<br>\nSingapore.
