        "content": "<p>NGOs protest against mining companies<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA: A coalition of 11 non-governmental organizations<br>\n(NGOs) has rejected government plans to issue permits to 15<br>\nmining companies to operate in conservation areas, citing the<br>\nenvironmental damage caused.<\/p>\n<p>At a rally in front of the Ministry of Forestry on Tuesday,<br>\nthe coalition warned of an environmental catastrophe that would<br>\nfollow the mining activities.<\/p>\n<p>\"People will suffer from the hazardous waste because of these<br>\nprojects, and that is not in comparison with the profits gained<br>\nfrom these mines,\" Indonesian Environmental Forum (Walhi)<br>\ndirector Longgena Ginting said.<\/p>\n<p>The existing contracts for these mining companies to explore<br>\nnatural resources in several conservation areas caused major<br>\nproblems for the government in the past.<\/p>\n<p>However, after evaluations and approval from the House of<br>\nRepresentatives, the government decided to allow the 15 mining<br>\ncompanies to continue with the projects.--Antara<\/p>",
