        "content": "<p>NGOs challenge open-pit mining<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA: A coalition of non-governmental organizations and 81<br>\nindividuals have petitioned the Constitutional Court to annul Law<br>\nNo. 19\/2004, which allows open-pit mining by 13 companies in<br>\nconservation forests.<\/p>\n<p>Adi Widyanto from the Mining Advocacy Network said on Tuesday<br>\nthat the law would cost the country more than it would benefit<br>\nfrom the open-pit mining.<\/p>\n<p>The law was passed by the House of Representatives, which<br>\npreviously opposed the legislation when it was still a government<br>\nregulation in lieu of law.<\/p>\n<p>The NGOs are also questioning the justification put forward by<br>\nthe government of President Megawati Soekarnoputri when issuing<br>\nthe regulation in lieu of law.<\/p>\n<p>The court will hear on Wednesday the arguments of 12 of the<br>\ncompanies that have won concessions to conduct open-pit mining in<br>\nthe conservation forests. -- JP<\/p>",
