NGOs call for class housing complec project<\/p>\n

Several non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have called on
\nmembers of the public to file a class action suit against the
\ndeveloper of Pantai Indah Kapuk (PIK) housing complex in Kapuk
\nMuara, North Jakarta.<\/p>\n
At the same time, environmentalist also said that property
\ntycoon Ciputra, who owns the project, former minister of forestry
\nHasjrul Harahap, and former governor Wiyogo Atmodarminto, who
\nwere both responsible for approving the project, should be
\ninvestigated.<\/p>\n
Chairman of the Jakarta chapter of the Indonesian Forum for
\nEnvironment (Walhi) Ahmad Safrudin said that a coalition of
\nseveral NGOs had managed to collect signatures of 87 residents of
\nKapuk Muara as required by Environmental Law No. 23\/1997 on class
\naction suits.<\/p>\n
Ahmad revealed that the NGOs include Walhi, the Jakarta Legal
\nAid Institute (LBH Jakarta), and the Indonesian Center for
\nEnvironmental Law (ICEL).<\/p>\n
\"The class action suit will be pursued by members of the
\npublic seeking appropriate compensation for damage to their
\nproperty, while the NGOs will take legal action against those
\nresponsible for the damage,\" Ahmad told The Jakarta Post on
\nThursday.<\/p>\n
Local residents have accused the luxury complex of causing the
\nfloods in the area.<\/p>\n
The Pantai Indah Kapuk project was also blamed for the annual
\nflooding of the toll road heading to Soekarno-Hatta International
\nAirport like what happened on Monday.<\/p>\n
Since its inception, environmentalists have opposed the
\nproject, as they predicted that it would affect the environment
\nin the surrounding area.<\/p>\n
Several environmentalists, including former minister of the
\nenvironment Sony Keraf and Walhi's director Emmy Hafild, called
\nfor the investigation of Ciputra, Hasjrul, and Wiyogo, for
\nviolating the environmental law.<\/p>\n
\"Our fear that the PIK development would have a detrimental
\nimpact on the surrounding environment has been proven now as
\njustified, therefore Ciputra, Hasjrul Harahap and Wiyogo should
\nbe investigated for violating the environmental law and the
\ncity's master land use plan,\" Emmy said on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Sony stressed that before any legal action is taken, the
\nJakarta administration should conduct an investigation to
\ndetermine the real cause of the annual flood.<\/p>\n
Indra Bramono, public relations manager of PT Mandara Permai,
\nthe developer of Pantai Indah Kapuk housing complex, denied that
\nhis company's project caused the annual flooding. He also denied
\nthat it had violated the city's master plan for the Kapuk area.<\/p>",
