NGO protests gun trade<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Government Watch (Gowa), a nongovernmental
\norganization which keeps tabs on the government's performance,
\nprotested on Friday the National Police's decision to openly sell
\nguns to public.<\/p>\n
Gowa coordinator Farid R. Faqih said the decision was
\nincompatible with the effort to create peace and order in
\nsociety.<\/p>\n
\"Gun possession encourages people to commit anarchic acts,\"
\nFarid told The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n
He aired the protest following an exhibition on police
\ntechnology from July 20 until July 23 at the Jakarta Convention
\nCenter in South Jakarta, which offered various guns for sale to
\nthe public.<\/p>\n
\"By making this decision, the police have consciously
\ncontributed to the creation of an unsafe environment in society,\"
\nhe said.<\/p>\n
Farid added that easier requirements for possessing firearms
\nwould encourage more and more people to obtain them.<\/p>\n
\"It used to be very difficult to own a gun because people had
\nto go to BAIS (Indonesian Military Intelligence) and go through a
\nlong procedure,\" Farid said.<\/p>\n
An operations manager of a firearms supplier at the exhibition
\nsaid that it would only take three months for an applicant to
\nhave his or her permit issued by the National Police. \"Our
\ncompany will help with the paperwork and other processes.\"<\/p>\n
Farid said the police now tried to profit from firearms sales.<\/p>\n
\"Its more profit-oriented than security-orientated in contrast
\nto what the police claimed during the exhibition,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Top executives of private companies, such as president
\ndirectors, chief commissioners, commissioners, presidents, and
\ndirectors of finance can apply for a firearms permit.<\/p>\n
Legislators, ministers, governors and even the cabinet
\nsecretary are also accommodated.<\/p>\n
National Police spokesman Brig. Gen. Dadang Garnida earlier
\nsaid that the seemingly easy procedures for obtaining a firearm
\nby a member of the public were meant to curb gun smuggling and
\nillegal gun possession in the country. (08)<\/p>",
