NGO criticizes govt over rights body<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: The presidential decree formalizing the election of
\n21 members of the National Commission on Human Rights is
\nconsidered unlawful and too accommodating to political
\ncompromises, a non-governmental organization (NGO) lamented.<\/p>\n
In its press statement, the Institute for People's Study and
\nAdvocacy (Elsam) said the government had violated Law No. 39\/1999
\non the National Commission on Human Rights which stipulates that
\na member of the rights body serve for a maximum of two five-year
\nterms.<\/p>\n
Decree No. 165\/M\/2002, signed by President Megawati
\nSoekarnoputri on Aug. 31 endorses the reelection of Kusparmono
\nIrsan and Djoko Sugianto, who have both already served their
\nsecond successive term under the old regulation.<\/p>\n
Elsam also criticized the government for its belated
\nendorsement of the commission's new team line-up. \"The two-month
\ndelay proves the government's lack of commitment to empowering
\nthe rights body.\" Elsam said.<\/p>\n
The NGO expressed its concern over the people's distrust in
\nthe commission due to the lack of credibility and unlawful
