NGO activist sues ex-legislator<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A non-governmental organization activist has
\nfiled a lawsuit with National Police Headquarters, demanding that
\npolice prosecute former House of Representatives (DPR) legislator
\nMuhammad Buang for alleged defamation.<\/p>\n
Muhammad Ali, chairman of the People's Struggle Mandate
\n(Ampera), said the former legislator had made a slanderous
\nstatement about Indonesia's minority population of Arab descent.<\/p>\n
"Buang once said that the government didn't need to invite
\nArab countries to invest here, since in this country, those of
\nArab descent are generally usurers," Ali, who identified himself
\nas also being of Arab descent, said on Tuesday after filing the
\nlawsuit.<\/p>\n
He said Buang, a former legislator of the United Development
\nParty (PPP) faction, made the statement during a morning talk
\nshow aired by the Elshinta radio station, which broadcasts from
\nthe Graha Mustika Ratu building in South Jakarta, last May.<\/p>\n
The talk show, entitled "The National Economy Faces Global
\nCompetition", featured speakers including former minister of
\nfinance Fuad Bawazier and former minister of investment and state
\nenterprise development Laksamana Sukardi.<\/p>\n
"Buang was about to put questions to Fuad Bawazier, when he
\nmade the slanderous statement," Ali said.<\/p>\n
During his visit to police headquarters, Ali allowed
\njournalists to listen to the recorded discussion.<\/p>\n
Herwin, a staffer at PT Radio Elshinta, told The Jakarta Post
\non Tuesday night that Ali bought the tape recording for Rp
\n100,000 from the radio station on Monday.<\/p>\n
