Newspaper agents need improvement<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Newspaper and magazine distributors need to
\nimprove their performance in matters regarding financial
\nmanagement and administration in order to face the challenges of
\nthe 21st century, the president of the Gramedia publishing
\ncompany, Jakob Oetama said yesterday.<\/p>\n
Speaking at a seminar on 'Agen Tahun 2000 plus' (Distributors in
\nthe year of 2000) Jakob suggested that newspaper and magazine
\ndistributors should use more high-tech equipment to improve their
\nperformance.<\/p>\n
\"Such equipment would speed up our job. Speed is the key to
\nthe press business. If we are slow, we will trail behind our
\ncompetitors,\" he said. About 1000 distributors from Jakarta,
\nBekasi, Tangerang and Bogor attended the one-day seminar,
\nsponsored by Kompas and The Jakarta Post dailies, sports tabloid
\nBola and the magazines published by Gramedia.<\/p>\n
Jakob, who is also chief editor of Kompas, said one of the
\nthreats being faced by printed media is audio visual media.<\/p>\n
However he believes newspapers and magazines will still
\nsurvive in the future, given the fact that they have established
\ntheir own audience.<\/p>\n
\"Reading a newspaper is better than watching television
\nbecause reading is more active than watching,\" Jakob said.<\/p>\n
The seminar featured other speakers including Kresnayana
\nYahya, a statistician, Darwis Ibrahim, the president of PT Boga
\nMitra Kencana, Jaya Suprana, the president of PT Jamu Jago and
\nSukyatno Nugroho, the president of PT Es Teller 77.(04)<\/p>",
