Newborn abandoned in Depok<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The body of a newborn, abandoned by its mother,
\nwas found yesterday in a mineral water carton at a soccer field
\nin Depok Timur, Bogor.<\/p>\n
The case was reported to the nearby police subprecinct and the
\nbaby's body was sent to the Cipto Mangunkusumo hospital's morgue,
\nCentral Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The head of the morgue, Mardiyono, said police believed the
\nbaby was still alive when abandoned and died later due to an
\nabsence of treatment.<\/p>\n
He said the baby's death was the fifth case of abandonment
\nreported to the morgue in the last seven days.<\/p>\n
Four other babies were sent by police from Cilincing, North
\nJakarta; Kramat Raya, Central Jakarta; and Setiabudi, South
\nJakarta.<\/p>\n
"All abandoned babies were sent here not by their parents or
\ntheir relatives," he said. "The parents were believed to dump the
\nbabies during the night, when people were unaware of what they
\nwere doing."<\/p>\n
"Unidentified bodies sent to us will normally be kept at the
\nmorgue for two weeks before being buried, but babies were buried
\ntwo or three days after their arrival.<\/p>\n
"We've learnt that their parents or relatives won't pick them
\nup."<\/p>\n
The babies were usually abandoned because they were born out
\nof wedlock or their parents were too poor to raise them. (04)<\/p>",
