New Zealand's statement on Joop expected today<\/p>\n
WELLINGTON (AFP): New Zealand's foreign minister, Don
\nMcKinnon, is to issue a statement today on allegations an
\nIndonesian cabinet minister indecently assaulted a hotel employee
\nin Auckland, the New Zealand Press Association reported
\nyesterday.<\/p>\n
The hotel employee, a young man, reportedly told police he was
\nindecently assaulted by the Indonesian minister when he was
\ncalled to a room in the hotel.<\/p>\n
McKinnon received a report on the incident when he returned
\nfrom an overseas trip at the weekend.<\/p>\n
NZPA reported a spokesman for McKinnon as saying the minister
\nwas likely to issue a statement today. The report is to be
\ndiscussed at a routine cabinet meeting this morning.<\/p>\n
Indonesian Tourism, Post and Telecommunication Minister Joop
\nAve on Saturday denied having molested the employee, calling the
\nincident a "misunderstanding" following allegations in the New
\nZealand media naming him as the minister.<\/p>\n
Ave left Auckland by private jet following the alleged
\nincident, failing to attend an international tourism conference
\nin the city.<\/p>\n
He said that the hotel's general manager informed him that the
\nwaiter had filed a complaint saying he had been molested and had
\ngone to the police as well as the press.<\/p>\n
"I responded that there must be a misunderstanding and that it
\nwas not true," Ave said. He also said that he later called
\nJakarta to report on the "unfortunate and wholly unexpected turn
\nof events" and received instructions to return home as soon as
\npossible.<\/p>",
