New Year's security a model for elections<\/p>\n

The relatively peaceful New Year's Eve celebration in the capital
\nwill be the benchmark for Jakarta Police to apply similar
\nmeasures to uphold security in the upcoming campaign period in
\nMarch until the completion of the elections in October.<\/p>\n
\"Learning from our experience, we will impose similar security
\nmeasures for the elections,\" said the city police chief, Insp.
\nGen. Makbul Padmanagara, on Friday.<\/p>\n
Makbul said his personnel would take stronger action against
\nthose violating the law during the campaign period, especially
\ntraffic violators.<\/p>\n
\"We won't allow supporters (of political parties) to parade
\nacross the city by riding on open trucks, pick-up vehicles or by
\nsitting atop buses or cars as they could endanger their lives and
\nother motorists,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Makbul warned that police would ticket motorists who violated
\ntraffic regulations in campaign rallies and also report to the
\nElection Supervisory Committee (Panwaslu) parties whose
\nsupporters committed violations.<\/p>\n
The police and Panwaslu have signed an agreement on violations
\nand crimes related to the elections. Police will handle criminal
\ncases, while Panwaslu will impose sanction on parties which
\ncommit administrative violations.<\/p>\n
During the New Year celebrations, police ticketed 650 traffic
\nviolators and confiscated 39 motorcycles that did not have the
\nnecessary documents.<\/p>\n
A total of 25,000 police personnel will be deployed for the
\nelections. They will be supported by the Jakarta Military
\nCommand.<\/p>\n
The officers will safeguard a total of 22,005 polling stations
\nacross the city. The joint forces will also patrol 253 areas on
\nmotorcycles, cars and trucks and speed boats.<\/p>\n
Makbul claimed that the number of traffic accidents in the New
\nYear celebrations were lower compared to last year, owing to
\nbetter public compliance with road rules.<\/p>\n
\"We received only two reports of traffic accidents during the
\ncelebrations. One man was killed and others were slightly
\ninjured,\" he claimed.<\/p>\n
However, hospital sources reported that one person died and 19
\npeople were injured in various car and motorcycles accidents. The
\nCipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital in Central Jakarta reported
\nthat 11 people were treated there for injuries sustained in
\ntraffic accidents.<\/p>",
