Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia \u2013 The United States and Israel\u2019s conflict\nwith Iran has sparked another dispute, this time concerning an American\ndefence contractor partner for AI tools used in military operations.\nAnthropic, which supplies AI tools to the US Department of Defence\n(DoD), has refused to allow its AI technology to be used for creating\nautonomous weapons or surveilling American citizens.<\/p>\n
This stance infuriated the Trump administration, which immediately\nprohibited federal agencies from using Anthropic\u2019s AI tools.\nNevertheless, according to reports from the Wall Street Journal, Claude\nAI from Anthropic is still being used in operations against Iran for\nintelligence research and targeting adversaries.<\/p>\n
Trump\u2019s ban on Anthropic usage opened the door for competing service\nprovider OpenAI. The ChatGPT creator announced it has newly signed a\ncontract with the DoD to become the supplier of new AI tools for\nmilitary purposes.<\/p>\n
OpenAI\u2019s decision immediately triggered controversy. Users began\ndeleting the ChatGPT application from their mobile phones en masse and\nreportedly switched to Claude AI.<\/p>\n
Beyond losing its user base, OpenAI also lost its leader. Caitlin\nKalinowski, who headed hardware development at OpenAI, announced her\nresignation on Saturday, 7 March local time.<\/p>\n
She stated that her reason for resignation was concern regarding\nOpenAI\u2019s agreement with the DoD, according to Reuters reporting on\nMonday, 9 March 2026.<\/p>\n
In a post on social media platform X, Kalinowski wrote that OpenAI\nrushed into approving the use of its AI models for the Pentagon\u2019s\nclassified cloud network.<\/p>\n
\u201cAI has an important role in national security. However, surveillance\nof American citizens without judicial oversight and lethal autonomy\nwithout human authorisation are boundaries that deserve further\nconsideration,\u201d Kalinowski wrote.<\/p>\n
Reuters could not immediately request comment from Kalinowski.\nHowever, she wrote on X that she deeply respects OpenAI CEO Sam Altman\nand the entire OpenAI team.<\/p>\n
She merely regretted that OpenAI announced the Pentagon agreement\nwithout clear restrictions.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is a governance issue. These matters are too important for\nrushed agreements or announcements,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
OpenAI stated one day after the agreement was reached that the\nagreement includes additional safeguards to protect its use cases.<\/p>\n
The company reaffirmed over the past weekend that their \u201cred lines\u201d\nprohibit the use of technology in domestic surveillance or autonomous\nweapons.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe recognise that people have strong views on this matter and we\nwill continue to engage in discussions with employees, government, civil\nsociety, and communities around the world,\u201d the company said in a\nstatement to Reuters.<\/p>\n
