New tyranny from legislature<\/p>\n
The House of Representatives has insisted on passing the bill
\non broadcasting into a law despite strong protests from many
\ngroups.<\/p>\n
The Association of Indonesian Television Journalists (IJTI)
\nhas heavily criticized the bill, which proposes the formation of
\nthe Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI).<\/p>\n
The House expects the commission to formulate the quality
\nstandard, content and classification of the shows to be aired.
\nThe commission will also be tasked to make a law on broadcasting
\nas well as to control and to fine any broadcasting company which
\nbreaks the law. It can close down any broadcasting company
\nconsidered to have violated the law.<\/p>\n
Such an institution could become a new dictator to
\nbroadcasting companies, like the defunct Information Ministry
\nduring the New Order administration.<\/p>\n
Freedom is the adversary of corruptors, which is why the
\npolitical elite wants to scrap the press. This daily thus calls
\nfor the cancellation of the passing of the bill into a law.<\/p>\n
