New telecommunications network forum established<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): In conjunction with its push to develop more
\nsophisticated technology in the telecommunications industry,
\nIndonesia established a forum yesterday for users of the
\nIntegrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) and Intelligent
\nNetwork (IN) facilities.<\/p>\n
The organization, called Indonesia ISDN and IN User Forum
\n(I3UF), was officially introduced here by Secretary General of
\nthe Ministry of Tourism, Post and Telecommunications Jonathan L.
\nParapak.<\/p>\n
\"This is a real example of private participation in supporting
\nthe country's development,\" Parapak said.<\/p>\n
I3UF groups telecommunications operators, vendors, terminal
\nsuppliers, software houses, consultants, regulators and other
\ninterested parties.<\/p>\n
\"ISDN and IN are the latest technologies in information-
\noriented telecommunications services. The public may need time to
\nreally comprehend the systems, so I hope I3UF will be able to
\nhelp people understand them by offering training sessions,\"
\nParapak said.<\/p>\n
\"We are going to enter a paperless business world in the
\nglobal trade and competition era. Therefore, we should prepare
\nqualified human resources,\" he said.<\/p>\n
I3UF, under preparation since late 1993, has two working
\ngroups that will discuss regulations, charging systems and
\ntechnical aspects. The forum has a management committee for the
\n1995-98 period, which is chaired by Suryatin Setiawan, a senior
\ngeneral manager of the state-owned telecommunications firm PT
\nTelkom.<\/p>\n
ISDN is a network, in general, evolving from a telephony
\nintegrated digital network that provides end-to-end digital
\nconnectivity. This then supports a wide range of services,
\nincluding voice and non-voice services, to which users have
\naccess by a limited set of standard multi-purpose user network
\ninterfaces.<\/p>\n
The development of ISDN began in 1992 after Telkom set up a
\nproject of ISDN and IN in cooperation with related institutions.
\nNew of the project was first learned in September 1994.<\/p>\n
\"Telkom has prepared the networks for the facilities in five
\ncities -- Jakarta, Bandung of West Java, Batam of Riau, Surabaya
\nof East Java and Medan of North Sumatra. In the first step, the
\nnetworks will be located just in commercial areas,\" Suryatin
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
The networks are scheduled to be introduced officially in
\nAugust, when the country celebrates its 50th independence
