New Tangerang mayor installed<\/p>\n
TANGERANG (JP): West Java Governor H.R. Nuriana installed on
\nMonday Mochammad Thamrin, a former secretary to the Tangerang
\nadministration, as the new Tangerang mayor to serve for the
\n1998\/2003 period.<\/p>\n
Thamrin replaces Djakaria Machmud, who faced a series of
\ndemonstrations during the last days of his term against his
\nalleged corrupt and nepotistic practices.<\/p>\n
Djakaria served the mayoralty, home to hundreds of large
\nexport-oriented companies, for eight years and seven months.<\/p>\n
The new mayor was elected in a plenary session of the local
\nmayoralty council on Sept. 29. Thamrin garnered 19 of the 45
\navailable votes during the session which was also attended by
\nDjakaria.<\/p>\n
Two other candidates, Bandung Deputy Mayor Endjang Sudarsono
\nand Cirebon Mayoralty Secretary Nana Suryana, received 14 and
\nseven votes respectively.<\/p>\n
As if having no idea about the protests connected to
\nDjakaria's alleged malfeasance, Governor Nuriana expressed his
\ngratitude to the outgoing mayor, saying that Djakaria had
\nsucceeded in constructing new roads, repairing old ones,
\npromoting sports and attracting investors to develop malls,
\nbusiness and commercial centers.<\/p>\n
\"Djakaria is one of West Java's most prominent developers,\"
\nNuriana said.<\/p>\n
The ceremony was safeguarded by a cordon of 200 military and
